Making space for self care is an act of self love. It is filling our own cup up so as to be in a place of overflow. As humans we can deplete our cup by constantly giving to others and putting their needs and emotions above our own, leaving us feeling empty. This can show up at home, by fulfilling the needs of our children or partner. It may be always working long hours leading to feeling stressed or overwhelmed. It may be saying yes and over committing when you really wanted to say no. We are quick to justify the reasons for putting someone else above our self, but investing in self care allows us to show up as our best self.
When you recover or discover something that nourishes your soul and brings you joy, care enough about yourself to make room for it in your life. – Jean Shinoda Bolen
What does self care look like?
Self care is different for everyone. It is simply making time for yourself to do the things that fill you with nourishment and make your soul shine. It may come in the form of music, having a bath, watching the sun rise, a healing facial, good food, dancing, singing, a massage, breathing in essential oils, being in nature, space for silence, reading a book, yoga, being present by the water, painting, spending time with loved ones, and sometimes it’s watching a whole season of Love Island.
Self care means giving yourself permission to pause – Cecilia Tran
It’s important to realise that self love and happiness comes from within, and expecting someone else to fill your cup can create a relationship of expectation and dependency. Remember, it is not their responsibility. Filling your own cup allows it to overflow into another’s. That is, feeling full enough to give others love and happiness from a place of abundance.
Self care is so important. When you take time to replenish the spirit, it allows you to serve others from the overflow. You cannot serve from an empty vessel – Elenor Brown
